Benjamin West, the iconic history painter whose career took him from America to England, died on this day. A darling of royalty and with a list of clients and pupils that included some very illustrious names, I hope you enjoy this gallery of his work!

Greatly admired and patronised by King George III but disliked greatly by the Prince Regent, later King George IV, that he gave away (got rid of) several paintings done for King George III on his succession.
Such a shame; I do love his work!
I hadn't realized he was so early---so Georgian. Very influential in England and in the establishment of the Royal Academy. I believe he was best known for his large paintings of scenes/events.
Indeed he was!
